How Do Zoos Prepare For Hurricanes?

IMG_7793.JPG

In this special edition episode, I chat with Zoo Miami Spokesperson and Communication Director, Ron Magill. Ron has been working at Zoo Miami for over 40 years and has seen his fair share of natural disasters. In the wake of Hurricane Ida and recent news of Hurricane Larry, the question needs to be asked…How Do Zoos Prepare For Natural Disasters like Hurricanes? Ron shares his insight and recalls when Zoo Miami was hit by Hurricane Andrew in 1992. He relives the terrifying time and talks about what they learned and how the zoo as a whole could be more prepared for future disasters. This is a MUST LISTEN for any animal care keeper preparing for a natural disaster!

Anthropomorphism And How It Impacts Our Understanding Of Animals

IMG_2969.JPG

In this episode, I have a discussion with wildlife educator, Tijana Selak about anthropomorphism and how it impacts our understanding of animals. We discuss the bad (how anthropomorphizing can negatively influence wildlife research and rehab, how its use through social media can be dangerous, and how it can hurt the work that accredited zoos are trying to do), and the good (how it builds empathy towards animals, and can benefit conservation efforts), as well as exploring examples in our everyday lives, how to properly interpret what animals are feeling or communicating, and how misinterpreting behavior can lead to dangerous conclusions.
