Anthropomorphism And How It Impacts Our Understanding Of Animals

IMG_2969.JPG

In this episode, I have a discussion with wildlife educator, Tijana Selak about anthropomorphism and how it impacts our understanding of animals. We discuss the bad (how anthropomorphizing can negatively influence wildlife research and rehab, how its use through social media can be dangerous, and how it can hurt the work that accredited zoos are trying to do), and the good (how it builds empathy towards animals, and can benefit conservation efforts), as well as exploring examples in our everyday lives, how to properly interpret what animals are feeling or communicating, and how misinterpreting behavior can lead to dangerous conclusions.

IMG_2376.JPG

In this episode, I speak with Dr. Melanie Culver, a scientist from USGS Fish and Wildlife Cooperative Research Unit and The University of Arizona. Dr. Culver and her team study jaguars in southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. Since 2011, they have studied jaguars by using camera traps. We cover a variety of topics including how many jaguars are currently in the United States, what they’re eating, how they co-exist with cougars, human and wildlife conflict, the border wall, and much more!

Episode #117: 'Tiger King' Review

Joe Exoti.jpg

In this episode, I have a round table discussion with Chris and Angie from the All Creatures Podcast about Netflix’s popular docu-series, ‘Tiger King’. It’s controversial and at times, the conversation gets heated, but more importantly, it’s a sound discussion and a good distraction during these trying times.

Episode #87: The "Big Bad Wolf"

wolf eyes.jpg

For well over a millennia, wolves have been depicted as ferocious, blood thirsty, monsters. In reality, wolves are intelligent animals that are much more similar to us than once thought. They are also a vital part of the ecosystem that keep prey populations healthy and in check.

In this episode, I interview carnivore biologist, Aspen. She’s the founder of POUNCE Conservation, an organization that uses research, science, and compromise to save America’s wolves. We discuss a variety of different topics including wolf predation on livestock, “surplus killing”, elk fatalities, and wolf hunting.
