Controversial Coyotes

IMG_8824.JPG

This week we discuss one of the most maligned animals in North America, the coyote. I speak with Keli Hendricks, the Ranching with Wildlife Coordinator for Project Coyote. Project Coyote is a national non-profit organization based in Northern California whose mission is to promote compassionate conservation and coexistence between people and wildlife through education, science and advocacy. In the interview, we discuss coyotes, dispel common misconceptions, how to coexist with them, and address recent news about coyotes attacking people in Vancouver.

Episode #105: Forest Elephants

Daniella.JPG

In this episode, I’m joined by “elephantologist”, Daniella E. Chusyd from Indiana University. Daniella studies the rare Forest Elephant found in central/western Africa. She begins by discussing her early work in Tanzania helping farmers protect their crops from elephants by using “beehive fences” and hot chili peppers. She then goes into the differences between Forest Elephants and Savanna Elephants and why they should be considered a separate species. She then discusses her upcoming work in Africa and gives words of advice for anyone wanting to follow their passion and dreams.

Episode #43: Urban Caracal Project

Carcal.jpg

In this episode, I interview Dr. Laurel Serieys, the founder of The Urban Caracal Project, a unique study currently looking at the effects of urbanization on caracal populations in South Africa. We begin discussing Dr. Serieys work with bobcats and cougars in Los Angeles and how that led her to Africa. We then dive into the elusive life of the caracal and how they adapt to life in the city, including the habit of preying on pets, in particular domestic cats. We end the discussion on how people can learn to co-exist with caracals and other wildlife.
